PureWow - Pedal Power

Posted by on

Here’s an idea for your next summer lunch date: Pedal your way to Heritage Bicycle General Store, catch up over sandwiches and cupcakes the shop sources from Southport Grocery and take home a helmet that will make you the most stylish cyclist on the street.

True, Heritage makes its own gorgeous custom bicycles and will also repair yours.

But since opening last winter, this Lincoln Park shop has become one of our favorite haunts for its more unexpected delights.

There’s seasonal lemonade with chunky fruit compote ($4.50, try the strawberry rhubarb now); the music is low enough to make this a lovely place to settle in with your laptop; and the shop recently began holding movie nights on its patio. (See Breaking Away tomorrow night at 9 p.m.; the screening is hosted by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and Salted Caramel.)

Protect your noggin to charming effect with the Yakkay helmets ($136) you’ll find in Heritage’s retail area; they share shelf space with Po Campo bike bags that come off and double as carryalls ($45 to $150), reflective pink harnesses ($35) for increased visibility, and other interesting things that the owners like, such as soft leather earrings by Chicago jeweler Alexis Ellers.

With our leather feathers flying in the breeze, we've never looked so chic on two wheels.
