Daily Candy

Portlandia nails every cyclist stereotype.

Heritage Bicycles is doing its darndest to dismantle them.

The new Lakeview shop is the first of its kind in the city: a bike workshop and coffeehouse in one.

Fifth-generation Chicagoan and owner Michael Salvatore earned his chops at Bowery Lane Bicycles inNew York. Back home, he aims to make cycling less intimidating for the nonenthusiasts among us. How?Coffee. Stumptown, to be exact.

In the front part of the light-filled space, friendly baristas whip up your drink of choice. Southport Grocery pastries, Mast Bros. Chocolate, and Winter Session gear are also available.

While you sip, ogle in-house mechanics assembling vintage Americana-inspired bikes in the back workspace. See something you like? Take one for a test-drive in the alley.

Custom work (paint jobs, frames) is also available.

Okay, twist our Armisen.
